Fast forward thirty years, and history reveals that Newcastle did not clinch the title; their drought now extends to 99 years, dating back to 1927. Instead, Manchester United overturned that significant deficit to secure the championship by a margin of four points, marking one of the Premier League’s most memorable conclusions.

In the 1997-98 season, Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal found themselves 12 points behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United as late as February, yet they managed to seize the title by a single point. Thus, when United fans celebrated a recent 3-2 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates by chanting “we’re gonna win the league,” there was a hint of irony amid the optimism.

United’s win propelled them into fourth place, now 12 points adrift of Mikel Arteta’s faltering league leaders, while trailing Manchester City and Aston Villa by eight points each. They are one point ahead of Chelsea and two ahead of Liverpool. However, there is skepticism regarding whether Michael Carrick’s team can mount a genuine title challenge in the coming months.

Even Carrick, who won five titles as a player with United, tempered expectations after the match, indicating that the focus should be on securing a top-four finish and Champions League qualification. Yet, the unpredictability of the current season means that a surprising title charge from United cannot be completely ruled out.

On Friday, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola called Arsenal the “best team in the world” at present. This could be a strategic attempt at psychological warfare, yet Arsenal boasts a perfect record of seven wins in seven Champions League matches and still maintains a four-point lead in the Premier League—positioning them strongly within Europe.

Despite this, Arsenal has secured only two points and scored a mere two goals in their last three league outings, leaving supporters anxious during their match against United. The fear of failure seems to weigh heavily on Arteta’s squad, compounded by the absence of a reliable goal scorer. Achieving the title without a player who consistently scores 20 goals a season is challenging; currently, the leading Premier League scorers for Arsenal, Leandro Trossard and Viktor Gyökeres, have only five goals each.

Star winger Bukayo Saka has not scored in his last 13 matches in all competitions, while Gyökeres hasn’t found the net from open play in his last 11 league games. Forwards Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke are also struggling to contribute, with the former failing to score in 13 league matches and the latter in 26.

Manchester City, now just four points behind, recently ended a four-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory against bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite this, City is grappling with defensive issues and already has five defeats to its name by mid-January.

In contrast, Villa is in an intriguing position to challenge for the title, sitting third and also four points behind Arsenal. Under Unai Emery, they have demonstrated their capabilities by defeating top contenders like Arsenal and Manchester United this season. However, following a surprising 1-0 loss to Everton, they face critical matches against United, Chelsea, and Liverpool in their final ten games, with their last fixture against City at the Etihad Stadium.

Recent title races have typically seen teams build early momentum, sustaining it under pressure from rivals. This season, however, the leading sides have faltered when opportunities to extend their advantage arose. As a result, Manchester United, currently 12 points behind in fourth, may find themselves unexpectedly in the title conversation, especially after their recent back-to-back wins against City and Arsenal.

While a title victory for United seems improbable, the current season’s unpredictability suggests that without one of the top three stepping up, an extraordinary twist could still occur.
