Villarreal Secures Freeman in Major Transfer DealVillarreal Secures Freeman in Major Transfer Deal

omidbasir- Villarreal has acquired Freeman from Orlando City in a deal valued at approximately $4 million upfront, with potential performance-based add-ons that could raise the total to over $7 million.

Finalized in January 2026, the agreement also includes a sell-on clause benefiting the MLS club. Villarreal had been monitoring Freeman for some time, having previously attempted to secure his transfer during the summer, but Orlando City was not open to negotiations at that time.

In their official announcement, Villarreal emphasized the qualities that led to their interest in the U.S. international.

“He is distinguished by his physical strength and attacking capabilities. A robust and swift player, he possesses impressive athletic attributes that enable him to operate in advanced positions, typically originating from the right flank,” the club’s website stated.

Freeman’s profile surged during the 2025 season, where he emerged as a regular starter, earned the MLS Young Player of the Year award, and was selected as an All-Star, establishing himself as one of the league’s premier full backs.

His arrival follows Villarreal’s recent signing of Tani Oluwaseyi from Minnesota United. The club has a long history of exploring talent in the U.S. market, dating back to the 2008 acquisition of Jozy Altidore for nearly €8 million, which was a record fee for MLS at that time.

Freeman’s performances have also translated well on the international stage. He has recently become part of the U.S. men’s national team under Mauricio Pochettino, positioning himself as a strong candidate for the 2026 World Cup. His move to La Liga further enhances his prospects as he transitions to a more competitive level.
