Villarreal Signs Argentine Talent Thiago Fernández

Villarreal has finalized its first signing of the winter transfer window, welcoming Argentine player Thiago Fernández. The talented midfielder arrives on a free transfer after concluding his contract with Vélez Sarsfield, following a significant period of inactivity that has kept him off the pitch for over a year.

At just 21 years old, Fernández will fill the gap left by Manor Solomon in the Castellon side’s lineup. However, there is a possibility he may initially be registered with the reserve team to ensure he gains sufficient playing time. Villarreal had been monitoring Fernández for several seasons, but a serious injury he sustained in December 2024 delayed the transfer.

Emerging from one of Argentina’s top youth academies at Vélez, Fernández made his debut in the 2023 Clausura tournament. His breakthrough came in 2024, where he showcased his talent with the first team, playing a pivotal role in their championship victory at the Liga Profesional. Over 48 appearances, he scored six goals and provided nine assists.

Fernández joins Villarreal with the aim of regaining his form after being sidelined for 13 months. On December 3, 2024, while regarded as one of Argentina’s brightest prospects, he suffered a severe anterior cruciate ligament injury during a match against Sarmiento.

Although he received medical clearance during the previous summer, his choice not to renew his contract with Vélez Sarsfield led to him being excluded from the professional squad and placed on a separate training regimen. Moving forward, his focus will be on regaining his physical fitness at Villarreal.
