Mohamed Salah was directly involved in 47 Premier League goals for Liverpool last season, yet recent performances have led to calls for change. Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has urged Liverpool manager Arne Slot to reconsider Salah’s role, especially following the team’s disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest, where Salah failed to contribute a goal or assist.

In his latest podcast, Rooney stated, “If I were in Slot’s position, I would make a significant decision to impact the team positively. Salah is not contributing defensively. If you’re a player on the bench observing him not putting in the effort, it sends a discouraging message.”

Salah, 33, had an outstanding last season, becoming the first player in Premier League history to finish with the highest goals and assists while also being awarded Player of the Season. His stellar performance coincided with Slot’s successful inaugural season as manager, where he led Liverpool to the title after succeeding Jurgen Klopp.

However, after a bustling summer transfer window that saw the arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak for a combined total of £241 million, Liverpool has faced challenges this season, currently positioned 11th in the league with 18 points from 12 matches.

“They’re certainly going through a tough phase,” Rooney remarked. “The unfortunate incident involving Jota likely affects the team, considering he’s a teammate. That must have some influence. However, there are no excuses for a lack of effort or tackling.”

Following the recent loss, captain Virgil van Dijk emphasized the need for collective responsibility within the team. With Slot’s squad managing only one win in their last seven league matches, the legacy of his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, is increasingly becoming a topic of discussion.

Rooney added, “Slot faces a significant challenge in revitalizing their performance and securing wins. When results falter, Klopp’s name is inevitably mentioned, much like how Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy loomed over Manchester United after Moyes and Van Gaal. It’s crucial for Liverpool fans to step back from those comparisons and support Slot in his role.”
