Wayne Rooney Reflects on Future Coaching Aspirations and Supports Michael CarrickWayne Rooney Reflects on Future Coaching Aspirations and Supports Michael Carrick

The former manager of Derby County and DC United, Wayne Rooney, recently addressed inquiries regarding his future career moves following his dismissals from Birmingham and Plymouth in 2024. Currently enjoying his role as a pundit and hosting a podcast, the 40-year-old has indicated that he is not eager to return to coaching at this time.

“I would, I definitely would if the right thing came up,” Rooney stated when asked about a potential return earlier this month. However, he emphasized that he would not want to repeat his previous experiences of living away from home and missing important moments in his children’s lives. “It has to be the right opportunity, and it must also be realistic. Given my previous roles, I doubt such a position will arise, which complicates the situation for a potential comeback,” he explained.

In light of Ruben Amorim’s recent dismissal at Manchester United, Rooney expressed his support for his former teammate Michael Carrick, who has been appointed to lead the team for the remainder of the season. Rooney described the task ahead as challenging but expressed confidence in Carrick’s ability to “steady the ship.”

He commented on The Wayne Rooney Show: “It seems like the obvious choice because there aren’t many top-tier managers available at the moment. It’s a difficult task considering the current state of Manchester United, and Michael must work to stabilize the situation. He is a great character, and while he may seem calm, he is focused and ready to take on this challenge.”

Despite it being early in Carrick’s tenure, Rooney’s insights might hold merit, especially after United’s impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester City in Carrick’s first match in charge.

Earlier this week, Rooney expressed his enthusiasm for potentially joining Carrick’s coaching staff at United if asked. “Of course I would; it’s a no-brainer. I’m not seeking a job, but I would gladly accept if approached. Appointing the right manager is crucial,” he added.

Rooney revealed that he would only consider returning to management with Manchester United or Everton. He also shared a personal insight into Carrick’s commitment to United. “If Manchester United called me for any position, I would eagerly accept. I have a deep affection for the club after spending 13 years there, and it’s one of the two clubs I would consider coaching for, alongside Everton. I know Michael had other offers, but he would only accept an interim role at Manchester United. That speaks volumes about what the club means to him.”

Following the victory over City, which temporarily placed United fourth in the Premier League, Carrick’s team will face league leaders Arsenal in eight days, followed by a home match against Fulham to kick off February.
