Werder Bremen has officially announced the appointment of Daniel Thioune as their new head coach, succeeding Horst Steffen, who was relieved of his duties over the weekend.

Steffen’s termination came as the team found themselves precariously positioned just above the relegation zone, sitting in 15th place with only a one-point margin separating them from the drop. The club has been unable to secure a victory since early November.

Daniel Thioune, who previously managed Hamburg and most recently Fortuna Düsseldorf, is now tasked with steering the club away from relegation. The duration of his contract has not been disclosed.

Thioune has been without a position since his dismissal from Fortuna in October. Consequently, Werder Bremen may be required to pay a nominal transfer fee to release him from his contract, which is set to run until 2028.

Following Steffen’s dismissal, Bremen explored several potential head coach candidates. Notably, both Bo Henriksen and Bo Svensson declined the opportunity to lead the team at Weserstadion. Additionally, Martin Demichelis and Dieter Hecking were also considered during the selection process.
