Werder Bremen has formally dismissed reports suggesting that Victor Boniface is set to undergo season-ending surgery.

During the recent break, reputable German sports media outlets, including Kicker and Sport Bild, indicated that Werder, Boniface, and his parent club Bayer Leverkusen had reached a consensus for the player to step away from the field and the public eye. These sources suggested that this would be achieved through knee surgery.

In a statement released on the club’s website today, Werder Bremen confirmed that Boniface is currently in Innsbruck, Austria, awaiting an appointment with a specialist on January 8th. However, it is clear that Boniface will not be returning to the pitch for Werder in the near future. His ongoing fitness challenges, coupled with his off-field activities, have made it unlikely for him to regain the favor of head coach Horst Steffen.

As a result of Boniface’s struggles, Werder Bremen is actively seeking additional attacking reinforcements during the January transfer window. This need is compounded by the fact that Boniface has yet to score a goal while on loan at the club. Meanwhile, young striker Keke Topp, the only other natural forward in the squad, has also failed to find the net in the Bundesliga this season and is being considered for transfer to other teams.

Given these circumstances, it appears that Werder Bremen will not be relying on Boniface’s return.
