Werder Bremen has officially confirmed that striker Victor Boniface will undergo season-ending knee surgery. The Nigerian international, currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, will not return to the pitch for Bremen this season. The club announced the procedure in a statement on their website today.

Last week, Werder Bremen had refuted reports indicating that a decision regarding Boniface had been finalized. However, it was widely acknowledged that his consultation with a specialist sports surgeon in Innsbruck, Austria, would lead to this conclusion.

During his loan period, Boniface did not score any goals for his Bundesliga club. His time in Bremen has been overshadowed by numerous off-field incidents, which have characterized his brief tenure with the team.

On the field, Werder’s head coach, Horst Steffen, remarked that Boniface often appeared as confused and disjointed as some of his social media posts.

“Given the extensive rehabilitation process ahead, we do not anticipate Victor returning to play this season,” stated Werder Bremen’s Peter Niemeyer. “We viewed his loan as an opportunity that came with certain risks. Ultimately, we must acknowledge that our expectations were not met in a way we had envisioned.”

Boniface now joins a string of recent transfer disappointments for Werder Bremen, reminiscent of the struggles faced by Guinean international Naby Keïta, a former Liverpool player. Both Boniface and Keïta are among the most significant transfer flops in the Bundesliga in recent years.

In light of Boniface’s situation, Werder Bremen is actively seeking to revitalize their attacking lineup, with Stuttgart striker Jovan Milosevic set to undergo a medical exam this weekend before joining the club on loan.
