omidbasir- West Ham approached Saturday’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers with the understanding that it was a crucial encounter, especially since they were facing the team currently at the bottom of the Premier League standings, which had yet to secure a victory this season. The Hammers, sitting in 18th place at the start of the day, found themselves firmly entrenched in the relegation zone after Wolves’ Jhon Arias, Hwang Hee-chan, and Mateus Mane all scored in the first half.

Alan Shearer was highly critical of West Ham’s performance, stating on the BBC: “Matheus Mane was absolutely outstanding. Wolves completely dominated West Ham, who produced one of the worst displays I’ve seen from any team this season. They were shocking.

“Wolves didn’t allow West Ham to play and certainly deserved the three points. West Ham failed to register a single effort on target; it was a dismal showing.

“I hesitate to use the word, but West Ham were pathetic. They contributed nothing to the game, with players avoiding challenges and failing to put themselves on the line. This was as poor as any team’s performance I have witnessed.”

Following the match, West Ham’s Konstantinos Mavropanos expressed remorse in his post-match interview, acknowledging the fans’ frustrations after conceding two goals. He remarked, “We understand the fans’ frustrations; when you concede goals like this, it’s normal for them to react.

“The first half did not meet our standards. Although we tried to show some character in the second half, we ultimately failed to create any meaningful opportunities. It is what it is now.”

Addressing the increasing pressure surrounding manager Nuno Espirito Santo, Mavropanos noted, “It’s been a difficult time for him, especially regarding fan expectations. I truly believe this team doesn’t deserve to be in this situation. However, it is up to us to change it. We need to bounce back quickly, with our next game in three days. We are disappointed to have lost today.”

Nuno himself acknowledged the team’s poor performance, calling it ’embarrassing’ in his remarks after the match, which marked Rob Edwards’ first victory as Molineux head coach. He stated, “It is embarrassing, and we must apologize to our fans. This was our worst performance to date. My focus is not on my future, but on how we can improve and secure results to climb the table.

“Now is the time for reflection and dialogue among ourselves to determine if we have the strength to rectify this. We needed much more from our players. It saddens me to admit that what I witnessed today was simply not good enough. Wolves possess a talented squad that can perform well on their days.”

Despite Nuno’s acknowledgment of Wolves’ capabilities, they had not won a match before facing West Ham and had conceded 40 goals in 19 games.

With no time to waste, West Ham faces Nottingham Forest in the midweek fixture, a critical match as Sean Dyche’s side currently sits in 17th place, four points ahead of the Hammers. A defeat for West Ham could prove disastrous, potentially jeopardizing Nuno’s position as manager.
