omidbasir- Wicky is an experienced coach with a robust background in both the United States and international soccer. He concluded his professional playing career with Chivas USA before transitioning to management, where he has held positions in his native Switzerland as well as in North America. Notably, Wicky managed the United States U-17 team in 2019 and served as head coach for the Chicago Fire from 2020 to 2021.

His appointment marks the first major decision made by Lee, who took on the role of Chief Soccer Officer (CSO) at the end of last year. Lee previously held the same position with New York City FC (NYCFC), where he played a pivotal role in securing the MLS Cup in 2021. He was instrumental in the decision to recruit Pascal Jansen for the 2024 season, who successfully guided NYCFC to an unexpected Eastern Conference Final.

Wicky faces a significant challenge as he replaces Peter Vermes, a prominent figure in Major League Soccer (MLS) for over 15 years. Vermes held a dual role as manager and CSO of Sporting Kansas City from 2009 until his departure in March of the previous year, after a disappointing start to the season in which the team failed to secure a win in their first six matches.

While Wicky did not lead the Chicago Fire to the playoffs, his tenure in Switzerland was marked by considerable achievements. As manager of Young Boys from 2022 to 2024, he clinched both the league and cup titles in the 2022-23 season before parting ways with the club the following year.

As he steps into his new role, Wicky is expected to oversee a rebuilding phase for Sporting Kansas City, who finished at the bottom of the Western Conference last season with only seven victories in 34 matches. However, with standout Designated Players like Dejan Joveljic and Manu Garcia anticipated to play significant roles moving forward, there is potential for a promising turnaround.
