Sarina Wiegman has the remarkable distinction of leading England to two consecutive European Championship victories—one on home turf and the other in Switzerland, where they triumphed over Spain in a penalty shootout, thereby overcoming the disappointment of their 2023 World Cup final defeat. In recognition of this achievement, several England players have been honored in the King’s New Year Honours list: Arsenal captain Leah Williamson has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), while Ella Toone, Keira Walsh, Alex Greenwood, and Georgie Stanway have been named Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for their contributions.

Despite being honored with a damehood, Wiegman is unable to use the title as she is a Dutch national. She expressed her gratitude, stating, “When I first arrived in England, I could never have imagined the respect and warmth I’ve experienced from the English people. I deeply thank the fans for their support.

“This title is a reflection of my exceptional team of players and staff. I extend my congratulations to Alex, Ella, Georgia, Keira, Leah, and also Dr. Ritan Mehta, the head of medical support for the England women’s team, who has also been awarded an MBE. Their contributions have been invaluable.

“Our team values highlight that recognition for one member is recognition for all. I want to pay tribute to every individual in our Euro squad. They each deserve celebration for their on-field performances and their positive impact in society. I am proud to work alongside such a dedicated group of individuals.

“This year has been special, and as we look forward to our next objective—qualifying for the 2027 World Cup—we hope to continue making the country proud.”

Wiegman has led the Lionesses to the final of every tournament she has managed, a remarkable feat, and she aims to maintain that record at the upcoming 2027 World Cup in Brazil. While the qualification process has yet to commence, her team is anticipated to be a strong contender. However, they face a challenging qualifying group that includes a rematch with Spain and matches against Iceland and Ukraine.

Regarding the draw, Wiegman commented, “We seem to meet all the time, whether in tournaments or in draws like the Nations League. Both teams are very competitive, so here we go again.

“It’s also exciting to play against Iceland and Ukraine, as we haven’t faced them in a long time. Ukraine’s promotion to League A is commendable, and while we aren’t very familiar with their team, I find it intriguing to face an opponent we don’t know well.

“Iceland had to contend with Northern Ireland in the play-offs, which is no small feat. I haven’t played them with England yet, but they have some talented players in their squad.”

The Lionesses will return to action on March 3 against Ukraine as they embark on their journey towards the 2027 finals. Wiegman’s current contract concludes at the end of the tournament, and she is eager to add more silverware to her distinguished career.
