Windass Shines at Wrexham Amid Transfer SpeculationsWindass Shines at Wrexham Amid Transfer Speculations

Windass departed Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent after a notable five-and-a-half-year tenure, signing with the newly-promoted Championship club, Wrexham, during the summer transfer window.

Wrexham has engaged in substantial spending to revamp their squad ahead of their second season in the English football hierarchy. Since the commencement of the 2025-26 campaign, Windass has been a standout performer, netting six goals and providing three assists in 21 matches across all competitions, including 19 appearances in the Championship. His age and experience have made him a pivotal figure in the Wrexham dressing room.

Following his impressive start at Wrexham, reports emerged suggesting that Scottish giants Rangers were considering a loan move for the experienced attacking midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window. Windass previously played for Rangers for two seasons between 2016 and 2018. However, according to Record Sport, Wrexham has declined this interest, as they do not wish to part ways with their key summer acquisition.

Windass’s current contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2027-28 season, and manager Phil Parkinson aims to retain the player for the duration of this period to maximize his contributions. Reports indicate that new Rangers coach Danny Rohl, who previously managed Windass at Sheffield Wednesday, is eager to reunite with him this January, but a transfer appears unlikely.

After a challenging start to the 2025-26 season, which culminated in the dismissal of Russell Martin in October, Rohl was appointed to revitalize the team at Ibrox. Under his guidance, Rangers have shown slight improvement, climbing from eighth to fourth place in the league, now trailing second-placed Celtic by six points.

Despite investing over £30 million ($40 million) in the summer of 2025, Reynolds and Mac have been encouraged to make significant moves in the January transfer window to further enhance their squad. Football League pundit Don Goodman remarked on CasinoHawks: “This season is becoming a learning experience for Wrexham. It’s a time for growth for the club, its owners, manager, players, and fans. I believe their ambition should focus on consolidating this season, even with their substantial spending. A major rebuild was necessary to bring in Championship-savvy players. They’ve had to make tough decisions regarding players who, despite being club legends, may not perform at this level.

As they navigate this transition, I always thought this season would be a critical juncture for their promotion journey. The question remains whether they will achieve mid-table stability or face a relegation struggle. However, I am confident there is no immediate threat of relegation. The team has much to learn from their experiences thus far and will continue to grow in the second half of the season.”
