Wolfsburg Coach Daniel Bauer Places Trust in Moritz Jenz as Defensive LeaderWolfsburg Coach Daniel Bauer Places Trust in Moritz Jenz as Defensive Leader

omidbasir- In a surprising development, VfL Wolfsburg’s coach Daniel Bauer has chosen to place his trust in the discontented German center-back Moritz Jenz as a central figure in the team’s defense. Despite not being a regular starter this season, Jenz has emerged as a crucial element for the team, which actively sought additional central defenders during the recent January transfer window due to defensive concerns.

Unexpectedly, Jenz has replaced the more consistent Konstantinos Koulierakis in Bauer’s starting lineup. This decision comes despite Koulierakis scoring his first Bundesliga goal during a matchday 21 defeat against Dortmund. Bauer opted for Jenz once again in the recent match against Leipzig, relying on the experience of the 26-year-old, who has played the full 90 minutes in six of Wolfsburg’s seven fixtures in the 2026 league season.

During a recent press conference, Bauer emphasized his preference for Jenz, who was affectionately nicknamed “Mercedes” by Celtic fans, over his other options. Jenz is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding the team through their relegation battle. The recent arrivals of Jeanuël Belocian and Jonas Adjetey on transfer deadline day are not anticipated to displace Jenz from his position alongside Denis Vavro.

Bauer articulated the importance of stability in the defense, stating, “The important thing is that we locate stability at the position. Moritz is already the type of veteran defensive leader we need. We need someone to anchor the team. That’s why he got the nod over Koulie. We don’t have the tallest team, but Moritz and Denis provide us with two giants for set pieces.”
