Kicker has confirmed a report from Sky Germany regarding VfL Wolfsburg’s interest in Japanese striker Kento Shiogai. According to Wolfsburg correspondent Thomas Hiete, the Lower Saxony club is making concerted efforts to secure the NEC Nijmegen player.

Hiete mentions that “intensive” discussions have already taken place between the Japanese U19 international and the Bundesliga side, with the 20-year-old expressing a strong interest in joining Wolfsburg.

Further updates from Hiete reveal that Shiogai’s impressive season, which saw him score nine goals in 14 competitive matches, has significantly increased his market value from €850,000 to €2.5 million in the latest transfermarkt listings. While Wolfsburg is currently facing financial considerations, the club is expected to invest heavily to acquire Shiogai’s services.

Additionally, Hiete aligns with Get German Football News regarding the prospects of signing a center-back from Union Berlin. It appears highly unlikely that the 27-year-old player will be persuaded to join the struggling Bundesliga team. Although an offer has been made, both the player and the club seem disinterested in proceeding with the transfer.

Wolfsburg has maintained connections with the Norwegian defender since last summer, and Hiete reports that the player even visited Wolfsburg recently to discuss potential terms with club officials. Nevertheless, it seems the Bundesliga outfit is exploring alternative options for bolstering their defense. The recent success of permanent signing Saël Kumbedi may also lead to a decision not to pursue further reinforcements at the fullback position.
