Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially appointed Rob Edwards as their new manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract, following the dismissal of Vitor Pereira.

Edwards, who had been serving as the head coach at Middlesbrough since June, now takes the helm at Molineux. His appointment comes after Wolves parted ways with Pereira on November 2. Initially, Middlesbrough declined an approach from Wolves to speak with Edwards, but after negotiations, both clubs reached a compensation agreement, allowing Wolves to proceed.

Having previously managed Luton Town in the Premier League, Edwards is also a former player for Wolves, making 111 appearances for the club between 2004 and 2008.

At Middlesbrough, Edwards leaves behind a team currently positioned second in the Championship, trailing leaders Coventry City by five points. In contrast, Wolves are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table, having garnered only two points from their first 11 matches this season.

Joining Edwards at Wolves will be Harry Watling, who has been appointed as the assistant head coach and was part of Edwards’ staff at Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough has announced that Adi Viveash will take charge of the first team while the club seeks a new manager. The statement highlighted that Edwards had signed a three-year contract with Middlesbrough earlier in the summer, but upon expressing his desire to join Wolves, the club agreed to a compensation package for both Edwards and Watling.

Wolves’ executive chairman, Jeff Shi, praised Edwards for his “tactical awareness” demonstrated during his tenure as a youth coach at the club. “After he took first-team jobs, he developed his own identity, character, and leadership,” Shi stated, adding that Edwards is not only well-acquainted with the club but is also a talented individual.
