Wolverhampton Wanderers is poised to make a formal inquiry to Middlesbrough regarding the appointment of Rob Edwards as their new head coach. As reported by BBC Sport, Edwards, who previously managed Luton Town, has emerged as a leading contender following the dismissal of Vitor Pereira, who left after a winless start to the Premier League season. Wolves had initially engaged in discussions with former manager Gary O’Neil, but he withdrew from consideration on Monday. At 42 years of age, Edwards, a former Wolves player, is now regarded as the club’s preferred choice at Molineux. Currently, Wolverhampton finds itself at the bottom of the Premier League table, having accrued just two points from ten matches, placing them eight points adrift of 17th-placed Burnley. To secure Edwards, who only joined Middlesbrough in June, Wolves will likely need to pay substantial compensation to the Championship club. Edwards had a notable tenure at Wolves from 2004 to 2008, making over 100 appearances. He later transitioned to coaching roles, including a brief stint as interim manager in 2016 following Walter Zenga’s departure. After managing Forest Green Rovers in 2021, he briefly took charge of Watford in 2022 but was dismissed after just 11 matches. In November 2022, he succeeded Nathan Jones as Luton Town’s manager, leading the team to the Premier League for the first time in its history within his first season. However, the club was relegated the following year, and Edwards departed during the 2024-25 season, as Luton faced further relegation to the third tier. Middlesbrough appointed Edwards on a three-year contract following the sacking of Michael Carrick.
