Wout Weghorst s Potential Move to FC Twente in 2026Wout Weghorst s Potential Move to FC Twente in 2026

Wout Weghorst is currently playing for Ajax, but his contract in Amsterdam is set to expire this summer. This raises the question of whether he will transfer to another Eredivisie club.

Recent reports suggest that Weghorst could join FC Twente in the summer of 2026. This speculation follows the announcement that Erik ten Hag will become the new technical director of FC Twente starting in the 2026-2027 season. FootballTransfers connects the dots by noting that Ten Hag was the coach who brought Weghorst to Manchester United on a six-month loan for the 2022/23 season, establishing a personal connection that could facilitate a transfer. Given the possibility of Twente acquiring Weghorst on a free transfer, this option appears increasingly viable. The arrival of Ten Hag may further strengthen this relationship, especially since Weghorst has expressed a desire to play for Twente once again.

The notable striker hails from Borne, located near Enschede. In 2024, he had already shown interest in Twente, with Streuer, a club representative, stating to ESPN, “He said he wanted to join Twente, and when a player like him expresses that, we cannot refuse. He was serious about it, but things changed when Ajax came into the picture. We had multiple discussions with him, but we needed to know what Burnley would demand. We simply cannot afford a striker priced at five or six million. That posed a challenge, and additionally, we are satisfied with Sam Lammers in that position.”

Could the circle close if Weghorst ultimately makes his way to Enschede this summer? Signs certainly point in that direction. Weghorst has previously shared, “As a young boy, I went to FC Twente with my brothers. We stood in Vak-P, the passionate section of FC Twente. That is something I have always said: yes, I would love to play there again in my career…”
