Wout Weghorst is currently playing for Ajax, but his contract in Amsterdam is set to expire this upcoming summer. Could he make a transfer to another Eredivisie club?

Recent reports suggest that Wout Weghorst may join FC Twente in the summer of 2026. This speculation follows the announcement of Erik ten Hag taking over as the new technical director of FC Twente for the 2026-2027 season. FootballTransfers points out the connection between Ten Hag and Weghorst, noting that it was Ten Hag who brought Weghorst to Manchester United on a half-year loan for the 2022-2023 season. This existing relationship could facilitate a move, particularly since Twente may have the opportunity to acquire Weghorst on a free transfer. Ten Hag’s arrival could strengthen these ties, especially as Weghorst has previously expressed a desire to play for Twente again.

Weghorst, a prominent striker born in Borne near Enschede, showed interest in Twente back in 2024. According to Streuer, speaking to ESPN, Weghorst had openly stated his desire to play for Twente. ”He expressed genuine interest, and if a player like him wants to join, we would not turn him away. However, circumstances changed when Ajax came into the picture. We had discussions with him, but first, we needed to know what Burnley would demand for him. We simply cannot afford a striker valued at five or six million. The price was likely too steep for us, and in addition, we are quite satisfied with Sam Lammers on our roster.”

Could the circle be completed if Weghorst indeed makes the move to Enschede this summer? It certainly appears possible. Weghorst once shared, “As a young boy, I went to FC Twente games with my brothers. We stood in Vak-P, the passionate section of FC Twente. It’s always been a dream of mine to play there during my career…”
