Since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took ownership of Wrexham in 2021, the club has experienced remarkable success. In just three years, they have ascended from the National League to the Championship and are now on the verge of playoff contention.

Back in May 2022, Wrexham was focused on securing their first trophy in the FA Trophy, entering the final as favorites against fellow non-league team Bromley. However, Michael Cheek’s second-half goal led to an unexpected defeat for the Red Dragons. Cheek later reflected on the match, noting that Wrexham carried the burden of expectation.

“There was no pressure on us to win,” Cheek told The Times. “It was all about them. It was never about Bromley. We allowed Wrexham to control the game, and when the moment came, we struck on the counter. I believe that goal shocked them.”

Cheek also mentioned his shyness when Reynolds approached him on the pitch post-match.

Despite the disappointment of the cup final, Bromley CEO Mark Hammond shared how graciously Reynolds and McElhenney accepted their defeat. During an appearance on The Business of Sport podcast, Hammond praised Reynolds, who was joined by actor Will Ferrell and football legend David Beckham at Wembley.

Hammond remarked, “We were the underdogs against Wrexham, but our team triumphed 1-0. That moment truly put us on the map. After the game, Ryan Reynolds took the time to shake hands with us, engaging in conversation and displaying genuine sportsmanship. It was a moment of class that I will always remember.”

While some high-profile individuals may exude arrogance, Hammond noted that Reynolds epitomized humility and kindness. “He possesses the trappings of A-list fame, yet he chose to connect with us and wish us well. I believe that is a testament to his character and a reminder of how to behave gracefully in defeat.”

Wrexham currently sits ninth in the Championship and will face Queens Park Rangers on Saturday. Following a recent draw with Leicester City and a defeat to Norwich City, a victory in London would significantly enhance their playoff aspirations.
