Xabi Alonso s Future at Real Madrid A Period of Reflection Amidst ChallengesXabi Alonso s Future at Real Madrid A Period of Reflection Amidst Challenges

Xabi Alonso, who previously led Bayer Leverkusen to Bundesliga triumph, was deemed the ideal candidate to steer Real Madrid forward, given his understanding of the high expectations in La Liga.

In October 2025, Alonso managed to break Madrid’s streak of four consecutive losses against arch-rivals Barcelona by securing a dramatic victory in El Clasico. However, the team faltered again in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup final, losing 3-2 to Barcelona in Saudi Arabia. Despite a remarkable solo goal from Vinicius Junior, Real Madrid fell short in another attempt to claim significant silverware after defeating city rivals Atletico Madrid in the semifinals.

Recent statistics show that Real Madrid has lost five of their last six encounters with Barcelona, a record that is concerning for president Florentino Perez and the club’s board. Alonso’s struggle for consistency this season has led to speculation about potential changes in the coaching staff. Between November 4 and December 10, the team recorded only two wins in eight matches, further fueling discussions about Alonso’s future.

However, according to Jose Feliz Diaz of AS, the manager’s position is not currently under threat. Diaz stated, “Despite the defeat against Barcelona, the manager’s job is not in danger. It’s a time for analysis and finding solutions to the team’s problems.” He emphasized that the performance in the Super Cup has kept Alonso’s job secure, asserting that the club is focused on solutions rather than placing blame on the coach.

Rather than hastily dismissing Alonso, Real Madrid management plans to collaborate with him to rectify the situation. It has been acknowledged that injuries have significantly hindered the team’s progress this season. Diaz reported, “The first priority is physical improvement and stopping the constant injuries that are affecting the Real Madrid squad.”

Injuries have plagued the team, with players like Ferland Mendy and Dean Huijsen suffering serious strains during crucial matches. The return of Niko Mihic to the medical department is just one of the changes anticipated in the club’s strategy. The coaching staff will be tasked with enhancing the squad’s fitness, with the club’s backing, as they believe there is still an opportunity for a successful season, contingent on improving physical conditions.

While Real Madrid could consider the winter transfer market for immediate solutions, historically, the club has been hesitant to rely on January signings, as they often struggle to find value during this period. Diaz mentioned, “As of now, there has been no discussion about entering the winter transfer market, which is not a transfer period they believe in, similar to their skepticism regarding the youth academy.”

Some youth players may see action in the upcoming Copa del Rey match against Albacete, but, apart from Gonzalo Garcia, who is already part of the first team, there has been no inclination to feature younger players as part of the immediate solution.

Real Madrid will again compete in cup action against Albacete on Wednesday, followed by a Liga match against Levante on Saturday and a Champions League tie with Ligue 1’s Monaco.
