The match was a hard-fought contest, ending in a 0-0 draw after regular time. It wasn’t until the closing moments of extra time that Manchester United broke the deadlock. James Overy’s cross inadvertently found its way into the Derby County net, thanks to an unfortunate deflection by defender Luca Crolla. Just two minutes later, Chido Obi extended United’s lead, putting them two goals ahead.

Despite Max Nessling scoring to narrow the deficit with seven minutes remaining, United managed to hold on and secure their place in the next round of the competition. Interim first-team head coach Michael Carrick was present at the match and expressed his support prior to the game. “My message of support is that I’m excited to watch. I was fortunate to play in this competition and win it during my youth at West Ham. It’s a significant opportunity, especially for this club and the youngsters, to perform at Old Trafford under the floodlights. There’s a bit of expectation, and it’s a great chance for them to take the next step. We’re all fully behind them, and while it will be a tough game, I’m looking forward to attending.”

The spotlight, however, fell on 16-year-old Kai Rooney, who made his debut appearance off the bench during extra time. As he entered the pitch, chants of “Rooney! Rooney!” echoed throughout the stadium, while his parents, Wayne and Coleen Rooney, along with several key club officials, looked on proudly. Despite Wayne’s intention to keep a low profile, he attracted attention from fans eager to see the former United star.

Coleen Rooney previously shared insights into Wayne’s absence from Kai’s early matches, explaining during her participation in ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here’ that it was challenging to balance his presence with the needs of the other children. “How do you say to all of these kids: ‘Go away, I’m watching my son?'” she remarked, underlining Wayne’s desire to avoid being a distraction.

Wayne has consistently praised Kai’s development, noting the importance of his mindset and enjoyment of the game during an interview at the SuperCupNI tournament in Northern Ireland. “He has great coaches at Manchester United, so I take a stand-off approach. I speak to him, but primarily, it’s about ensuring he enjoys playing the sport.”

Looking ahead, United U18s are set to face Oxford in the last-16 of the FA Youth Cup, a match in which Kai hopes to participate as he continues to impress coach Fletcher. Meanwhile, the senior team will be back in action on Sunday, aiming to build on their recent 2-0 victory over Manchester City as they prepare to take on league leaders Arsenal. United displayed dominance in their last match, with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu, although three goals were ruled out for offside and they hit the woodwork twice.
