Arsenal midfielder Martín Zubimendi has dismissed speculation in Spain suggesting he is a crucial player for Real Madrid.

At 27, Zubimendi transferred to the North London club from Real Sociedad for €70 million (£60 million, $83 million) in July, despite rumors that former Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso viewed him as an ideal replacement for the departed Luka Modric.

In an interview with Cadena Ser radio, Zubimendi addressed ongoing reports about his significance to Madrid, stating, “I don’t think so. Real Madrid has more than enough players to perform well, so no.”

Zubimendi played a full match on Tuesday, contributing to Arsenal’s victory over Chelsea, which secured their place in the Carabao Cup final.

He remarked, “We have taken the first step, but we are aware that there are three very important months ahead.” Currently, Arsenal leads the Premier League, six points ahead of Manchester City, and has advanced to the Champions League round of 16 by winning all eight group stage matches.

“This is about winning it,” Zubimendi emphasized. “The standings are excellent, but we will see who ultimately claims victory.”

Since joining Arsenal, Zubimendi has made a strong impact, netting five goals and providing three assists in 33 appearances.

He acknowledged his successful adaptation to the Premier League, stating, “When you feel important and you are playing, it is truly comforting. It’s true that I’ve adapted well to the league, but I’ve noticed that the matches are very demanding, with everyone putting you under pressure and the level being very high.”

Additionally, Zubimendi expressed concern for his teammate and fellow Spain international Mikel Merino, who is recovering from a foot injury.

Merino suffered a stress fracture during Arsenal’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on January 25 and is expected to return only at the end of the season.

Zubimendi shared, “I know firsthand that he will do everything possible to recover for the World Cup. It pains me to see him sidelined because I understand how professional he is and how much he wants to contribute on the pitch. He is the one who is hurting the most, but the impact of his injury on the team is significant.”
